Eye specialists may even be able to detect other health issues during a comprehensive eye exam. The ophthalmologists have more expertise as they hold an advance degree in specialized field, and sometimes refer their patient to some other doctor specialized in other health conditions, when a doubt is created in the course of an eye test.
The serious health problems that can be detected in an eye examination are diabetes, hypertension, autoimmune disorder, high cholesterol, thyroid disorder, tumors, and cancer. The occurrence of any of these health problems directly affects eyes. The patient suffering from diabetic condition tend to also suffer from poor eyesight, this is because the retina of the eye receives diabetic blood supply.. Hypertension may cause bends, kinks or tears in the eyes’ blood vessels. Eyes are inflamed in autoimmune disorder. Yellowish cornea is an indication of high cholesterol.
